Embedded systems are playing important roles in our lives every day, although they might not necessarily be visible. A quantity of the embedded systems they use every day control the menu method on tv, the timer in a microwave oven, a mobile phone, an MP3 player or any other tool with some amount of intelligence built-in. In fact, recent poll information shows that embedded computer systems currently outnumber humans in the WORLD. Each day, our lives become more dependent on ‘embedded systems’, digital information expertise that is embedded in our surroundings. This includes not only safety-critical applications such as automotive devices & controls, railways, aircraft, aerospace & medical devices, but also communications, ‘mobile worlds’ & ‘e-worlds’, the ‘smart’ home, clothes, factories etc. All of these have wide-ranging impacts on society, including security, privacy & modes of working & living. Over 98% of processors applied today are in embedded systems, & are no longer visible to the customer as ‘computers’ in the ordinary sense. New processors & methods of processing, sensors, actuators, communications & infrastructures are ‘enablers’ for this pervasive computing. They are in a sense ubiquitous, that is, invisible to the user & omnipresent. As such, they form the basis for a significant economic push.
